At their long-established segment factory in Klus/Balsthal, MARTI Tunnel AG is producing the lining segments for the southern access tunnel of the Gotthard – with a clear focus on automation. Building on the successful cooperation during the Sarner Aa project, Herrenknecht Formwork once again provided customized automation technology to streamline production and reduce cycle times.

The key challenge: implementing a fully hydraulic mould system while maintaining the tightest segment tolerances. Thanks to a combination of new and proven technologies, this demanding requirement was met – with minimal manual intervention.

Scope of supply

  • Fully hydraulic opening and closing of the moulds
  • Demoulding, turning, stacking and loading with one device
  • Moulds cleaning and oiling by robot
  • Moulds have no cover, but a full cover in the casting chamber
  • Finishing of the concrete surface, use of AI system for quality control.

Cycle time down, precision up

In this project, Herrenknecht Formwork combined advanced hydraulics, smart robotics and AI-based quality control to create a highly efficient production line. A newly developed multifunctional handling system demoulds, turns, stacks and loads up to three segments in one go.

The robot for surface finishing was successfully reused from a previous project – a testament to the system's adaptability and sustainability. Together with MARTI Tunnel AG, this pilot project once again proves: automation is not only a question of technology – it’s a question of teamwork.
