Formwork systems in focus at ACI Concrete Convention 2025

On October 27, 2025, Stefan Medel, our Head of Division at Herrenknecht Formwork, gave a presentation on the current state and future of segmental formwork systems at the ACI Concrete Convention in Baltimore, Maryland. The session was part of the ACI Short Course on Precast Segmental Tunnel Lining Design, Production and Construction, which brought together international experts from design, construction, research, and manufacturing.

Advancing precast segment technology

Organized by Dr. Verya Nasri and Dr. Mehdi Bakhshi, the Short Course offered a comprehensive overview of critical aspects in precast segmental lining. Topics included structural design, concrete technology, high-performance steel fiber reinforcement, segment accessories and gaskets, formwork systems, precast production methods, contractor quality control, and durability-based design. The program created a collaborative setting for academia, designers, contractors, and suppliers to share insights and practical experience.

Spotlight on formwork systems and automation

In his presentation, Stefan Medel focused on formwork systems for segmental lining, highlighting current best practices and future trends. He presented project insights from recent international references and emphasized the role of automation and digitalization in modern precast production. Key topics included:

  • Fully hydraulic mold systems
  • Robots for cleaning, oiling, rebar cage placement, and surface finishing
  • Smart solutions for space-saving and high-efficiency setups
  • Digital twin applications and integrated data platforms such as Herrenknecht.Connected

These innovations aim to address global challenges such as labor shortages, rising quality demands, and the need for more sustainable production.

International collaboration for future solutions

The ACI Concrete Convention once again proved to be a leading platform for technical exchange and innovation in the global concrete community. For Herrenknecht Formwork, the event was a valuable opportunity to share expertise, contribute to the future of underground infrastructure, and strengthen international collaboration with industry partners.
