Automation in tunnel lining production at the Herrenknecht Tunnel Symposium Sweden

On December 9, 2025, clients, planners and construction companies from across the Nordic tunnelling community met in Stockholm for the first Herrenknecht Tunnel Symposium in Sweden. The program focused on key challenges in Nordic geology, sustainable tunnelling practices as well as digitalization and automation along the entire TBM project lifecycle. As part of this, Stefan Medel, Head of Division at Herrenknecht Formwork, gave a dedicated presentation on segment production logistics, automation and segment design.

From segment logistics to automation and digitalization

In his talk, Stefan Medel outlined the central role of segment production within the overall tunnel construction process. Using typical layouts for stationary and carousel production setups, he showed how well-planned logistics, modern formwork systems and automation solutions support reliable segment supply, even under demanding conditions. The presentation also highlighted how robotics and digital tools are increasingly integrated into production lines to stabilize quality, reduce manual workloads and increase safety of the whole process.

Focus on segment design, waterproofing and fire resistance

A further focus of the session was on current trends in segment design. Topics included structural design aspects, durable waterproofing concepts and fire-resistant lining solutions tailored to modern safety requirements in long tunnels. In this context, he also presented Combisegments®, a one-pass lining solution for sewage tunnels that combines established tunnel market products into a serial gas- and watertight segment system, eliminating HD-PE panel welding and enabling more compact, long-lasting tunnel designs with reduced construction times. By linking design considerations to the capabilities of today’s formwork and production technology, the presentation underlined how close coordination between tunnel designers, contractors and equipment suppliers can unlock additional efficiency and reliability in segmental lining projects. To illustrate these developments, Stefan Medel shared insights from recent reference projects, including the Gotthard Road Tunnel 2nd tube.

The Herrenknecht Tunnel Symposium in Stockholm once again showed how closely formwork, automation and digitalization are linked to the performance of modern TBM projects. For Herrenknecht Formwork, the event was an important platform to contribute experience from international segment factories and to support project owners and contractors in the Nordics in taking tunnel lining production to the next level.
