Latin America gets going.
Extension of infrastructure runs at full steam.
Large sports events, such as the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil and the Olympic Games in August 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, frequently give the first impetus for further comprehensive infrastructure measures. A report from the Federal Association of German Industry (Bundesverbands der Deutschen Industrie - BDI) says that many Latin American countries currently and in the next years expand their infrastructure, and invest several hundred billion US dollars for this purpose. This trend also becomes obvious for the tunneling industry, including Herrenknecht AG and Herrenknecht Formwork.

Besides prestigious traffic projects, such as the expansion of the Metro networks in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, and Caracas, a large number of measures are instigated in the fields of supply and disposal. Previously open main sewers are converted into closed underground tunnel systems. The „Interceptor Tunjuelo Canoas“ project in Bogota, Columbia, is an example. It controls flood problems and will control the wastewater disposal in the river basin of Rio Tunjuelo. The 8,121 m long main sewer is bored with a Herrenknecht EPB shield (Dia. 4,940 mm). Herrenknecht Formwork produced the 9 sets of moulds for the concrete segments.

High-tech equipment for a clean energy source.
Hydroelectric power is another main focus. Here, Herrenknecht Formwork is currently involved in the Coca Codo Sinclair project in Ecuador. In the near future, the 1,500 MW power plant on the Coca river will support power supply of the state of Ecuador with another 8,731 GWh per year. The project includes a 24.8 km long feeder tunnel of an inner diameter of 8,700 mm, which is bored with two Herrenknecht double shield TBMs. Herrenknecht Formwork supports the concrete segment production with 12 sets of moulds, 2 carousel systems, and extensive handling equipment.

Contact persons established on site.
Local representatives who are well known in the tunnelling industry advise the customers, and cooperate with the local Herrenknecht branch offices. If the customer wants a comprehensive solution for segment production at the jobsite, we will be on site and advise personally our customers on planning, and work out individual solutions – if required including the integration of existing used elements.
„Formwork Day Latin America“ in Sao Paulo.
In April 2012, experts gave more than 60 participants from Latin America an overview of the topic "segmental lining". A series of lectures and a product exhibition of Herrenknecht Formwork and other event partners provided information about proper concrete mix, formwork technique, segment sealing and segment bolting, up to consulting and software solution for tunnel lining. Besides deepening their expert knowledge, the participants of the successful event could also exchange experiences with other experts. Due to the positive response from both sides – guests and organizers – another event of the same type is planned for the next years.
